Perimeter Practice

During our unit on perimeter, we discussed many ways to find the perimeter of shapes.  One of the more engaging ways was to use a string to measure the distance around a shape, then measure the string with a yard stick.

National Day of Reading

On January 23rd, we celebrated the National Day of Reading.  Students wore comfy clothes, could bring in their favorite book to share, comfy blankets and pillows, and a flashlight.  Other teachers came in as guest readers, we read in the dark with flashlights.  Students got a chance to share their favorite books.  It was a great day of reading and celebrating!

Circles and Stars

Circle and stars is a game students play to practice multiplication facts.  Students are partnered using fair sticks.  Each set of partners are given 1 dice.  Each person has a dry erase board.  Partners take turns rolling the dice.  First roll is the number of circles drawn and the first factor.  Second roll is the number of stars in EACH circle, that is the second factor.  Students then multiply or count the number of stars to figure the product.  Easy and fun game to play at home.

Bean Division

Today we used beans to show that division is separating into equal groups or to show how many are in each group.  Just another tool for solving problems.  We spend a lot of time talking about the problem solving tools we have in our tool belt.  Tomorrow we will discuss how multiplication and division are opposites... another problem solving tool for our tool belt.
